A volunteer fire brigade, an emergency plan, and one internal building code — what keeps the commons safe in the woods, and keeps us insurable.
Off-grid in the West Kootenays means we are our own first responders. The commons runs a volunteer fire brigade — pump, hose, a water supply sized for firefighting (tying into the water storage), and FireSmart defensible space around every home. Wildfire is the danger that doesn't wait for the truck from town.
The commons sets its own building standard that every home and shared building meets: FireSmart construction, safe wood-heat install, the documented sanitation spec, and sound structure. This isn't bureaucracy — it's what keeps your neighbour's cabin from burning down yours, and it's a big part of what keeps the whole place insurable. One code, written by us, that everyone builds to.
Fire, injury, a lost hiker, a hard winter — the commons keeps a plan, kit, and trained people, with the mesh for alerts and a working relationship with Salmo and Trail services. Paired with the dojo's first-aid, it means help is already here.
The Wardens' Guild runs the brigade, holds and updates the building code, and trains the responders. Firefighters, tradespeople, and EMTs especially welcome.
