🥋 Health & the Dojo

Exploring

A dojo and a wellbeing practice built for hard-working bodies — training, movement, recovery, and real first-aid on remote land.

Why a dojo on a planting commons

Tree planting is brutal on the body — tendons, knees, backs. The whole reason this commons exists is to be a base to recover and get strong between seasons. A dojo — martial arts, movement, strength, mobility — is how a planter stays durable instead of breaking down: discipline, skill, and a training community that shows up rain or shine.

Recovery, not just training

Half of strength is healing. The dojo pairs with the sauna, bodywork, stretching, and honest rest — the off-season is for putting the body back together, not just pushing it. Strong, rested planters plant longer careers.

First-aid & remote medicine

Five minutes from Salmo, but still remote. The commons needs real first-aid and wilderness first-responder capacity — trained people, a stocked kit, and a telehealth link over the mesh. Honest limit: this is first response and prevention, not a hospital — serious cases go to Salmo or Trail. Knowing that cold is part of doing it safely.

Mind as well as body

Isolation is the quiet danger of off-grid life. A training hall is also a gathering and peer-support space — showing up for each other is itself the medicine. Body and mind, kept up together.

A place to heal — the care nursery

And when someone is sick or laid up, they shouldn't recover alone in a cold cabin. A small care nursery — a warm, tended sick-bay near the lodge — is where an ill or recovering member is looked after, fed, and checked on. Not a hospital (serious cases go to Salmo or Trail), but the difference between being sick alone off-grid and being held by your commons until you're back on your feet.

Who runs it — the Dojo Guild

The Dojo Guild keeps the hall, runs the classes, holds the first-aid certs, tends the care nursery, and looks after the commons' wellbeing. Instructors, nurses, and medics are exactly the kind of skills we're recruiting.
